However, the government said there was an assassination attempt on Fico, and he is being transported to a hospital in a life-threatening condition.
Fico was shot multiple times and is being treated at a vascular surgery clinic, but his injuries are unknown.
The attack was condemned by EU chiefs, and the suspected gunman is in custody.
Slovak President Zuzana Caputova was “utterly shocked” by the attack and wished Fico a speedy recovery.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala called the attack “shocking” and hoped for Fico’s quick recovery.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also sent his thoughts to Fico during this difficult time.
Fico has been prime minister since last year and has made controversial remarks that have strained relations with Ukraine.
He has questioned Ukraine’s sovereignty and called for a compromise with Russia, sparking mass protests.
Fico’s party member, Lubos Blaha, blamed the liberal media and progressive politicians for the attack.
