Apple Shakes Up iOS 18 With New Features, Leaving A Bee In Elon Musk’s Bonnet
Apple released new features for iOS 18 and Elon Musk isn’t happy about one of them.
Eko Hot Blog reports that global tech giant, Apple, has unveiled a slew of changes and new features for the upcoming iOS 18, the iPhone’s operating system.
EDITOR’S PICKS
The company made the unveiling at its Worldwide Developers Conference event on Monday.
However, one of the new features drew the ire of Tesla CEO, Elon Musk.
The feature is the integration of AI chatbot, ChatGPT, the product ofparent company OpenAI, into Apple devices.
In multiple posts on X, which he owns, Monday night, Musk said the decision to integrate ChatGPT into Apple devices would leave customer data vulnerable.
He also threatened that apple devices would not be allowed in all of his companies.
“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies,” Musk wrote.
“That is an unacceptable security violation.”
The X CEO further criticised Apple for not being “smart enough” to create its own AI, while telling users that the company is “selling” them down the river.
“It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!” Musk wrote.
“Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river.”
Apple Denies Unauthorized Access to Data
According to Apple, it has developed its own AI tool known as Ajax large language model (LLM), contrary to Musk’s claim.
Apple’s built-in AI software can analyze the keywords and phrases within a webpage or document and generate a short summary containing only the most important information.
However, Apple provides the option of using ChatGPT and says users control whether their information is shared.
“You control when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared,” Apple says on its website.
“Anyone can access ChatGPT for free, without creating an account.
“ChatGPT subscribers can connect accounts to access paid features within these experiences.”
Apple notes that privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT — their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests.
“ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account,” the company adds.
ChatGPT is expected to improve the performance of Siri, Apple’s voice assistant.
New Key Features to Expect From iOS 18
Apple unveiled updates to a wide range of apps and features, including Mail, Photos, iMessage, and Apple Wallet.
Here are some of the changes that may get users most excited about iOS 18:
- A new home screen design
- iMessage is becoming more interactive (You can schedule messages in advance)
- You can cut down on time spent searching for photos due to a more organized library
- Option to adds apps to a hidden folder
