The Federal Government has declared June 12 Democracy Day as a public holiday.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 12 a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day, commemorating the country’s journey towards democratic governance.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in a statement on Tuesday by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Aishetu Ndayako, congratulated Nigerians on this milestone.

He urged citizens to reflect on the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and work towards a united, secure, peaceful, and indivisible Nigeria.

The statement said, “As we mark another Democracy Day in the history of our dear country, let us all reflect on the efforts of our founding fathers and ensure that Nigeria remains a united, secured, peaceful and indivisible entity.”

Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo encouraged Nigerians to remain committed to the principles of democratic governance, as the country celebrates another Democracy Day.

“The minister also called on Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to appreciate the progress that has been made, and look forward to a better future for Nigeria’s Democracy,” the statement added.

He reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to driving positive reforms, aimed at revitalizing the nation’s economy and strengthening security.

Recall that former President Muhammadu Buhari had shifted Democracy Day celebration from the original May 29 to June 12 in honour of the late MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
