Eko hot blog reports that officials from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos State Command, visited Augustine University on June 11, 2024, to educate students and staff on the dangers of drug misuse.

EDITOR’S PICK

Held at the University’s Convocation Hall, the event was a key part of the NDLEA’s proactive efforts to combat drug abuse.

The programme was led by Chief Superintendent of Narcotics Cecilia Alu, with Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Peter Akinbode delivering an insightful presentation.

Akinbode addressed the physical, psychological, and social impacts of drug abuse, as well as the legal ramifications for offenders.

He highlighted how substance abuse can derail academic and personal ambitions, leading to severe health issues and legal troubles.

Before the main event, the NDLEA team met with Augustine University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christopher Odetunde.

During this courtesy visit, Professor Odetunde expressed his gratitude for the NDLEA’s efforts and emphasized the importance of continuous education and awareness to curb drug abuse in educational institutions.

He also reiterated the university’s commitment to supporting such initiatives and collaborating with the NDLEA to ensure a drug-free campus environment.

The program also featured an interactive question-and-answer session, where students and staff engaged directly with NDLEA officials. Participants voiced their concerns, sought clarification on drug-related issues, and received guidance on staying safe and drug-free.

This segment provided a platform for open dialogue, allowing attendees to discuss real-life scenarios and receive practical advice on avoiding the pitfalls of drug misuse.

Additionally, the NDLEA officials distributed educational materials, including brochures and pamphlets, detailing the signs of drug abuse, preventive measures, and resources for those seeking help.

They emphasized the importance of peer support and encouraged students to look out for one another and report any suspicious activities.

This sensitization programme is part of the NDLEA’s broader strategy to raise awareness about drug abuse and promote preventive measures in schools across Lagos State.
