The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF, has promised to support the National Population Commission to establish more birth registration centres in Nigeria.
The UNICEF Chief of Lagos Field Office, Mrs. Celine Lafoucriere made this pledge when a delegation of the NPC Lagos State, led by Barrister Saidat Olayinka Oladunjoye, visited her office.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the UNICEF representative assured the NPC delegation of the organisation’s full support in establishing birth registration centres, setting up offices in primary health centres and training of personnel to manage the place.
This came as Oladunjoye spoke on enhancing Lagos’ Vital Registration System, with both parties emphasizing the importance of political will and collaboration.
According to Lafoucriere, there is absolute need of political will in achieving these goals.
The delegation included State Director Mr. Bamidele Sadiku, HOD PM&A Mrs. Samiat Lawal, HOD VRD Mr. Amuda Garfa, HOD Admin Mrs. Olayinka Chijioke, and Personal Assistant to the HFC Mr. Muyiwa Okesanya.
The primary objective of the visit was to seek collaboration and support from UNICEF to enhance the Vital Registration System in Lagos State.
Barrister Oladunjoye emphasized the need for additional registration centers to increase birth registration across the state. She highlighted the necessity for support in infrastructure, equipment, personnel training, and publicity to ensure effective mobilization.
Mrs. Celine Lafoucriere, the UNICEF Chief of Lagos Field Office representative, expressed her gratitude to the NPC delegation and congratulated Barrister Oladunjoye on her appointment. She underscored the significance of identity for children, noting, “Identity makes a child proud of who they are; it gives them the right values and education that will guide their future.”
Mrs. Celine Lafoucriere assured the HFC of UNICEF’s full support in establishing more centers for birth registration, including setting up offices in primary health centers equipped with the necessary tools and trained personnel. She also proposed the involvement of young volunteers, who would be properly trained and equipped for the task.
