'Unite and Stop Speculations,' Biden Encourages Democrats

US President Joe Biden addressed concerns about his age during a rally in North Carolina on Friday, asserting his confidence in winning re-election despite a challenging debate performance against his Republican opponent, Donald Trump.

“I know I’m not a young man, to state the obvious,” Biden remarked, acknowledging his slower pace and debate struggles. “But I know what I do know, I know how to tell the truth [and] I know how to do this job,” he told the cheering crowd in Raleigh, who chanted “four more years”.

Biden’s debate performance, marked by verbal stumbles and a hoarse voice, has intensified existing worries among some Democrats. Despite this, Biden’s campaign remains steadfast that he is fit for another term.

EDITOR’S PICK

“Absolutely not,” said campaign spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg, dismissing suggestions that Biden might step aside. Vice President Kamala Harris and other campaign surrogates admitted Biden’s debate missteps but emphasized his substantive responses over Trump’s.

Former President Barack Obama defended Biden, tweeting that “bad debate nights happen” and highlighting the choice between Biden, who has “fought for ordinary folks his entire life,” and Trump, who “only cares about himself.”

However, Democratic insiders express ongoing concerns. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi noted the debate wasn’t great from a performance standpoint, and other Democrats like Kate Bedingfield described it as disappointing. Some Democratic donors even deemed the performance “disqualifying.”

Contrary to media speculation, early polling suggests no significant change in voter support post-debate. A Data for Progress poll showed 62% of viewers believed Trump won, while 30% favored Biden. Fundraising remains a critical measure, with Biden’s campaign reporting $14 million raised recently and $27 million following the debate.

Biden plans further fundraising efforts, meeting with donors in the New York Hamptons and Redbank, New Jersey. Meanwhile, Trump held a rally in Virginia, claiming victory in the debate and criticizing Biden’s competence. Trump dismissed the idea of Biden dropping out, suggesting Biden still polls better than other Democrats like Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris.
