Flood Prevention: Lagos Begins Dredging Upstream Section Of System 156 Channel
Lagos has begun the dredging of the upstream section of System 156 Channel in flood prevention efforts.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has commented the the clearing and dredging of the Upstream Section of System 156 Channel from the Conservation area.

The Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development in a social media post on Saturday.
He said the exercise, which kicked off on Saturday, is to allow free flow water and deflood the area.
“Following the inspection of flooded areas around System 156 which affected Alpha Beach road and other axis, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources today commenced the clearing and dredging of the Upstream Section of System 156 Channel from the Conservation area to allow free flow water and deflood the area,” Wahab wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In a related development, the Lagos State Government has urged residents to continue to keep their environment clean while imbibing good environmental sanitation and hygiene practices.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen made the appeal on Friday at the maiden celebration of National Environmental Sanitation Day (NESD) and the Second Quarterly Community Sanitation Clean-Up Exercise of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources held at Ojodu Local Government Development Area.
The Permanent Secretary, who spoke through the Director of Sanitation Services, Dr. Hassan Sanuth, said it is necessary to prevent the occurrence and spread of not only cholera but also other sanitation-related diseases.
He mentioned that currently the country is faced with the challenge of a cholera outbreak and Lagos is one of the affected States.

“As we all know, cholera is spread through contaminated water or food that are results of unhygienic and poor sanitation practices such as open defecation, poor waste management and poor personal hygiene amongst others,” the Lagos official said.
