Kano Gov. Abba Yusuf States Position On LGBTQ Rights Amid Samoa Controversy
Kano Governor Abba Yusuf has stated his position on LGBTQ rights amid the Samoa agreement controversy.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, says his government will not tolerate any group suspected to be promoting and advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) rights in the state.

The state Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, disclosed the governor’s position to journalists on Sunday.
The declaration came on the heels of rising tensions over the activities of groups allegedly promoting same-sex marriage in the state.
Addressing concerns of an alleged agreement by the Federal Government related to LGBTQ rights, Dantiye said the state government will not accept any agreement that promotes the activities of gays and lesbians.
He noted that such activities contravene the norms and values of the people of Kano and breaches the state’s moral standards.

The commissioner added that the governor has mandated the Hisbah Board to crack down on groups promoting LGBT rights in the state.
“I spoke with the governor, and he expressed his disapproval of the said agreement, even though it has not yet been confirmed. He assured me that there is no room for LGBT activities in Kano,” Dantiye said.
“As you know, 98% of Kano’s population are Muslims by faith, and our religion is against this immorality, so we can’t accept it.”
The commissioner added that there are ongoing consultations with religious leaders on how to curb such activities in the state.
The controversial Samoa agreement has become a topic of discussion for many Nigerians as they wonder what it entails since the news that Nigeria has signed.
A newspaper had reported that the Samoa agreement signed by the Nigerian Government on June 28, 2024, contains clauses that mandate LGBTQ rights.
However, a review of the 172-page document shows that the agreement does not contain LGBT clauses, as claimed by the newspaper.
