President Bola Tinubu has appointed former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, as co-chairman of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the committee was inaugurated at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the President, the committee aims is to provide lasting solutions to the frequent clashes between farmers and herders in different parts of Nigeria.

The President will serve as the chairman of the committee, with Jega replacing APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.

Key officials at the inauguration included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, among others.

This committee follows a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria, which Ganduje headed.

Tinubu urged committee members to focus on their mandate and improve the lives of Nigerians.

He emphasized the committee’s role in transforming the livestock sector and boosting agricultural productivity, export opportunities, and economic growth.

“This sector will boost agricultural productivity, enhance export opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.

“We have seen solutions and opportunities within this adversity that has plagued us over the years, and I believe prosperity is now in your hands,” he said.

Professor Jega served as the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) between June 2010 and June 2015

He presided over the preparation and conduct of the 2011 and 2015 general elections.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree (Hon.) in political science from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, and later earned a master’s degree and PhD from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA.

Before his appointment as INEC chairman in 2010, Prof Jega held various academic and administrative positions, including vice-chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (2005-2010); deputy vice-chancellor of Bayero University (1995-1996); director of the Center for Democratic Research and Training (2000-2004); president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU (1988-1994); and vice president of the ASUU (1986-1988).
