Protest: IGP Egbetokun Reveals Forces Backing Action

On Friday, July 26, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, disclosed that intelligence reports have unveiled the involvement of foreign mercenaries in the upcoming nationwide protests.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Egbetokun cautioned Nigerians against participating in these protests, stressing the potential risks. “We have been monitoring developments surrounding protest threats,” he stated.

“While some groups call for violent protests, emulating Kenya’s recent events, others advocate for peaceful demonstrations. However, some individuals promote peaceful protests with violent undertones, raising concerns about their sincerity.”

Egbetokun pointed out the historical context of protests in Nigeria, warning against the dangers of unchecked demonstrations.

He acknowledged those who have withdrawn from the protests due to concerns over the true motives behind them, affirming, “We have credible intelligence on foreign mercenaries’ involvement in this planned protest. The Nigerian police urge all Nigerians to exercise caution and think twice before joining any protest group.”

To ensure the safety and orderliness of any demonstrations, Egbetokun called on protest organizers to provide their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.

He emphasized the police’s readiness to maintain peace, saying, “We have put measures in place to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order in case there is going to be any protest.”

The IGP encouraged protesters to cooperate with the police, assuring them of protection, “Those who insist that they must come out to protest, please cooperate with the police. The police will be there with you and protect you.”

Egbetokun’s remarks highlight the delicate balance between the right to protest and the need for security, urging Nigerians to prioritize peace and caution during this critical period.
