Govt Extends Teachers, Nurses Retirement Age to 65
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced that the State Government will soon issue a statement on increasing the retirement age for nurses in the state from 60 to 65 years.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that he made this known during his monthly interactive session with journalists on Friday night at the Government House in Umuahia.
Otti stated that this change is part of his administration’s broader commitment to revitalizing the health sector, which is one of its top priorities. He also said that the government had previously extended the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years.

In addition, the governor revealed that plans are underway to establish a state-of-the-art medical city in Abia. A committee has already been formed, and a location has been identified for the project. The government will collaborate with two international medical mission groups, Extended Hands and Lifted Hands, to bring this vision to life.
“We are fully committed to this project because it will be one of our flagship initiatives,” Otti said. “The goal is to turn Abia into a hub for medical tourism.”
Governor Otti also emphasized that his administration has been able to operate without taking on any new debt. However, he acknowledged that the state has received several tempting offers, and at the right time, they may consider accessing funding from sources such as the African Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank Group.
“The terms are favorable, and we believe that when the need arises, we will be able to tap into these resources. The state is in good financial health, but we remain vigilant,” he added.

Otti also touched on the progress his government has made in various sectors, including agriculture. He mentioned that the state has successfully reclaimed palm, rubber, cocoa, and other plantations that were previously concessioned to private individuals by past administrations.
The governor expressed his gratitude to the people of Abia for their continued support and urged them to remain committed to the development of a new Abia.
