China, which had previously topped the Olympic medal standings at the 2008 Beijing Games, gave a strong performance but ultimately fell short.

The U.S. women’s basketball team contributed to this victory by defeating France in a closely contested match, earning the final gold medal of the Games and solidifying the U.S.’s position at the top.

In terms of total medal count, the United States led with 126 medals (40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze), while China followed with 91 medals (40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze).
