EKO HOT BLOG reports that the incident, which happened in the wee hours of Monday, has sparked fears of escalating political violence ahead of the elections.
A statement by IPAC’s National Publicity Secretary, the umbrella body of all political parties in Nigeria, Chinyere Kalu, warned that the incident could undermine the country’s fragile political stability
The council urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take swift and decisive action to address the menace of political violence and terrorism, which pose a significant threat to democratic values and national security.
IPAC also called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the bombing, identify and prosecute the perpetrators, and take proactive measures to prevent future attacks.
Kalu described the bombing as the handiwork of desperate politicians seeking control of political structures in the state.
IPAC warned that such reactionary elements should allow democracy to thrive in the state and not view politics as a do-or-die venture.
The council called on all political parties, stakeholders, and Nigerians to condemn the act of violence, promote peace, unity, and democratic values, and support the government’s efforts to combat political extremism and terrorism.
IPAC stated, “The bombing of the Action People’s Party (APP) secretariat in Rivers State is a heinous act that has not only caused panic and terrorized peaceful residents but also threatened the fragile political stability of our nation. This brazen attack on democracy, the rule of law, and the very fabric of our society is a stark reminder that political extremism and terrorism can undermine our two and a half decades of unbroken democracy, emboldening those who seek to destroy our nation.
“This bombing cannot be unconnected with desperate politicians seeking control of the political structures in the state and who are not ready for an alternative view and vibrant opposition. These reactionary elements should allow democracy to thrive in the state and should not see politics as a do-or-die venture.
