Ukraine Establishes Military Office in Russia’s Kursk Region

Published

Ukraine has established a military administrative office in the Kursk region of western Russia amid its ongoing incursion into Russian territory.

General Oleksandr Syrsky announced that this office is designed to “maintain law and order” and “meet the immediate needs” of residents.

In a social media video, General Syrsky informed a meeting led by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the office is operating “on the territories controlled by Ukraine.”

In response, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov stated that Moscow plans to deploy additional forces to “safeguard” the local population in the affected region.

On its tenth day, Ukraine’s incursion represents the deepest penetration into Russian territory since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022. Ukrainian forces have reportedly advanced 35kilometress into Kursk and now control 1,150 square kilometres, including 82 settlements.

Despite these advancements, Kyiv has emphasized that it does not seek to permanently occupy Russian territory but aims to pressure Moscow into negotiating “a just peace,” according to Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesman Heorhiy Tykhy.

In response to the incursion, Russian officials have prepared additional measures to protect areas bordering Ukraine, including enhancing the “management of troops” in the Belgorod region, which, along with Kursk and Bryansk, shares a border with Ukraine.

Recall that the Belgorod region had been declared a federal emergency zone, with around 11,000 residents evacuated from the Krasnaya Yaruga district.

Amid these developments, a UK source confirmed that British tanks have been used during the Ukrainian operation. While the UK Ministry of Defence did not specify which weapons were employed, it reiterated that Ukraine has a “clear right” to use British-supplied arms for “self-defence against Russia’s illegal attacks.”

While Western nations have provided Ukraine with various military supplies, none have granted permission for long-range missiles to strike targets within Russia.

President Zelensky has consistently lobbied for these restrictions to be lifted.
