The 54-year-old was arrested at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight bound for Hanoi, Vietnam, via Doha.
According to a statement released on Sunday, August 18, 2024, by the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, Mbadugha was intercepted on Monday, August 12, 2024, during the routine outward clearance of passengers.
The businessman was flagged for further scrutiny after testing positive for ingesting narcotics.
Following his arrest, Mbadugha was placed under observation for four days. During this period, he excreted 88 wraps of cocaine, which had a combined weight of 1.710 kilograms.
The drugs were carefully packaged and ingested in an attempt to smuggle them out of the country.
In his confession, Mbadugha revealed that he had been approached by a friend in the Isolo area of Lagos to carry out the illicit operation.
He was promised a payment of $2,000 upon successful delivery of the drugs in Vietnam. Mbadugha claimed that he had no prior experience with drug trafficking but was driven by financial desperation.
The NDLEA has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and has vowed to continue its crackdown on individuals involved in the illegal drug trade.
