The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued an urgent warning to the public regarding rising water levels in the River Niger system.

The alert was given on Friday by the agency’s Director-General, Umar Mohammed, who emphasized the potential threat of flooding as waters from upstream activities in neighboring countries are gradually making their way towards Nigeria, with Kebbi State being the first to be affected.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to Mohammed, this development is attributed to upstream activities in Niger and Mali, as reported by the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) in Niamey, Niger Republic. The floodwaters from these countries are gradually moving southward, raising concerns about possible flooding in Nigeria.

NIHSA has reassured the public that dam operators at Kainji and Jebba, both situated on the River Niger, have been notified and are prepared to take necessary actions.

As of August 22, the agency confirmed that these dams are not currently releasing water from their reservoirs, a key measure to control potential flooding.

However, Mohammed warned that the risk of flooding is expected to peak by the end of August and continue into September.

He urged states and communities located along the River Niger system to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of potential floods.

The Director-General assured that NIHSA would continue to closely monitor the situation and provide regular updates to the public, ensuring that everyone is informed and prepared for any developments.
