Ahmad Rufai Abubakar, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), submitted his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday evening at the State House.
After he met with President Tinubu, Abubakar spoke to journalists, explaining that his resignation was prompted by personal and family matters, but he assured that nothing critical was wrong. He expressed gratitude for the President’s understanding and emphasized that their friendship would continue.
Despite his resignation, Abubakar pledged to remain vigilant about the nation’s security, highlighting his ongoing commitment to Nigeria’s well-being.

“There are several reasons one might choose to resign, including personal and family matters, but there is nothing seriously amiss. My friendship with the President will endure. I discussed this with Mr. President, and he understood. I promise to remain engaged with the security issues facing our country,” Abubakar stated.
He also expressed his appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve as Director General for seven years and acknowledged the President’s willingness to consider his briefings and advice. Abubakar took pride in mentoring younger officers, ensuring a strong succession plan, and leaving behind a legacy of a well-prepared and capable intelligence agency.
“Although it might not be my place to say, I am deeply grateful to the President for the opportunity to serve our country under his leadership. His confidence in me, his willingness to listen to my briefings, and the chance to mentor the next generation of officers have been invaluable experiences. Over the past seven years, I’ve worked to prepare our younger officers, and I am confident that many of them are ready to excel in this role,” he remarked.

Abubakar revealed that President Tinubu graciously accepted his resignation and recognized the unique achievement of serving under two consecutive presidents, a testament to his dedication and expertise in national intelligence.
“Today, after the briefing, I tendered my resignation, and Mr. President graciously accepted it. I thanked him for giving me the opportunity to serve Nigeria under his transformational leadership. Serving two Presidents consecutively is a rare privilege,” he concluded.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Abubakar was first appointed as NIA Director General in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who extended his tenure in December 2021.
