Abure, NWC Members Shun Otti’s Meeting Over Governance Dispute

There are fresh indications that Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, along with his National Working Committee (NWC) members and loyalists, plans to shun today’s stakeholders’ meeting summoned by Abia State Governor Alex Otti.

EDITOR’S PICKS

EKO HOT BLOG reports that this planned boycott comes shortly after the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, endorsed Otti’s call for the meeting. A source close to Abure’s camp, who requested anonymity, revealed exclusively to our reporter that none of the NWC members would attend.

The source from Punch stated, “We won’t attend it. Were you not at last week’s briefing, where the national chairman subtly warned the governor and other party members to desist from meddling in the party administration? He meant every word he said that day.”

The source further criticized Otti’s action, saying, “It is wrong of Otti to summon a meeting of party chieftains or stakeholders without the approval of Abure. Have you seen anything like that happening in other parties like APC, PDP, or even NNPP?”

Efforts to confirm this from LP National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh and NWC members were unsuccessful. The LP National Secretary, Umar Farouk, and LP National Youth Leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, could not be reached for comment. However, another NWC member confirmed via text, “Yes, we won’t be there.”

It was previously reported that Abure rejected Otti’s initial call for a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, urging the governor to focus on governance rather than attempting to manage party affairs.

Abure’s frustration grew from Otti’s proposal to convene a NEC meeting on August 31 to dissolve party executives at various levels, citing expired tenures.

Abure objected, arguing that it was not within the governor’s purview to make such decisions.

Despite Abure’s objections, Otti renamed the NEC as a ‘Stakeholders’ Meeting,’ which is set to occur on September 4 at the Government House in Umuahia, Abia State.

The gathering is expected to include Obi, his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed, Abure-led NWC members, the Abia deputy governor, as well as serving and former Senators, House of Representatives members, and state Assembly members.
