The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has demanded an immediate reversal of the recent petrol price increase, arguing that it will exacerbate the hardships faced by Nigerians.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda criticized the unilateral decision to raise the price of Premium Motor Spirit, claiming it violates principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness that should govern such impactful decisions.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the statement read: “Amidst unprecedented economic challenges, including soaring inflation, rising unemployment, and the declining value of the Naira, any further increase in petrol prices will only worsen the plight of ordinary Nigerians.

The subsequent rise in transportation, food, and other essential costs will further erode the purchasing power of many, pushing more families into poverty.”

The caucus expressed concern that the decision by NNPC was made without proper consultation with stakeholders, including the National Assembly, which represents public interests.

This unilateral move disregards essential principles and risks escalating existing economic and social instability.

The government must urgently address the link between economic difficulties and social unrest, rather than worsening the situation. Failure to act will only encourage more unrest and potential violence from disaffected youths.”

The Minority Caucus called on the Federal Government to promptly reverse the petrol price increase and to explore more sustainable measures to stabilize the economy without further burdening the populace.
