Obaseki Reveals Fallout with Oshiomhole Over State Burial for Anenih

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki revealed on Friday that a major factor in his falling out with his predecessor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, was his decision to declare a state burial for the late PDP chieftain Chief Tony Anenih.

Anenih passed away during Obaseki’s first term as governor, while he was still a member of the APC.

EKO HOT BLOG gathered that Obaseki made this disclosure during a PDP campaign rally at Opujie Primary School in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, the hometown of Chief Anenih.

Speaking to the crowd, Obaseki urged support for the PDP’s candidate, emphasizing that it was the local community that first advocated for the next governor to come from Edo Central.

He criticised the APC for attempting to nominate a Benin candidate but ultimately presenting an Esan candidate “through the back door.”

Obaseki explained, “When Chief Anenih passed away, I was not yet in the PDP, but I declared a state burial for him due to his significant contributions to our state and Nigeria.

This decision created tension between me and Oshiomhole, who viewed it as an unforgivable act. Nevertheless, I had to do what I believed was right. Edo State must remain united.”

He continued, “That’s why I am here today, supporting an Esan candidate for governor, and not just any candidate, but someone competent, intellectually sound, and with a proven track record like Asue Ighodalo.”

Obaseki asserted that advancing Edo State requires a candidate like Ighodalo.

In his address, PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo pledged to complete all ongoing projects in Esanland. “I will ensure the completion of all current projects, whether they involve water, roads, hospitals, schools, or other areas, and will initiate new ones,” he said.

“Under my administration, Edo will strive for self-sufficiency and become a model state. We will work to eradicate poverty and continue the positive development started by Obaseki.”

Ighodalo urged voters to support his candidacy to build on the progress made by Obaseki and enhance the future of Edo State.
