Ibeju-Lekki LG Clears Blocked Canals in Owode Labora, Abijo to Prevent Flooding

Ekohotblog reports that the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has resumed the clearing of primary canals in the Owode Labora and Abijo areas in order to prevent the recurrent flooding that has plagued these communities.

The clearing operation, which began last week, encountered a major challenge when a section of the canal was found blocked by heaps of sand, garbage, and silt.

This obstruction made it impossible for the swamp buggy to continue its work.

“The blockage was caused by a build-up of heavy waste, which was responsible for the massive flooding experienced in this part of our local government recently,” said Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government.

To address the issue, the local government immediately secured an excavator to clear the canal and restore the drainage system.

Hon. Olowa called on residents to stop dumping refuse in the canals and warned against further actions that could obstruct drainage systems.

“We urge all our residents to desist from dumping refuse in our canals. We also appeal to real estate owners and contractors to stop stacking building materials on our drainages and canals,” the chairman stated.

In addition to the canal clearing, the local government has been working on improving waste management in the community.

As part of these efforts, they have invested in Garbage Collection Tricycles for more efficient waste collection.

“We have procured 10 additional tricycles, which will be delivered by the end of this month to increase our carrying capacity and better serve the residents,” Hon. Olowa added.

The chairman urged the public to use these tricycles for waste disposal rather than resorting to indiscriminate dumping.

“Kindly patronize the Garbage Collection Tricycles for your waste and stop dumping refuse indiscriminately,” he appealed.

The administration expressed gratitude for the community’s support and cooperation in these initiatives, affirming its commitment to keeping Ibeju-Lekki clean and flood-free.

“Thank you all for your maximum cooperation. Together, we will continue to develop Ibeju-Lekki,” the chairman concluded.
