Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), reaffirmed the current administration’s dedication to sports and talent development.

Team Lagos has significantly outperformed its previous achievements at the games.

Fatodu stated, “The Centre of Excellence’s impressive performance this year was remarkable, surpassing the feat of the previous edition after recording 26 gold, 20 silver, and 19 bronze medals. Lagos finished second in the last edition with 21 gold, 19 silver, and 21 bronze medals.”

During the closing ceremony, he emphasized that the future of sports, particularly in terms of talent and grassroots development—central to the NYG—rests with Lagos State.

He highlighted the state’s impressive showing at this national event for U-15 athletes, asserting that Lagos will be a key contender in future championships.

Notably, Lagos triumphed over the host state, Delta, in the basketball final, showcasing the strength of the Eko girls with a narrow 10-8 victory.

In boxing, Team Lagos excelled by winning all four available gold medals.

Additionally, a decisive goal from Olaitan Muinat in the hockey final secured another gold for Lagos, who maintained an undefeated record across six matches.

In traditional sport, Lagos claimed the gold medal in the female Abula category after defeating Oyo in a closely contested final, with scores of 16-13, 8-16, and 16-14.

“We see these young talents as the future of sports in Lagos State. We are looking at them from the angle of sports development around education, what they are doing in school, and what the future holds to ensure further improvement in sports talent development,” Fatodu remarked.

He also noted that the state is providing substantial incentives to athletes, thanks to the support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
