Rivers: Tensions Rise in Ahoada East as Cultists Strike Again, Two Youths Killed
Suspected cultists have intensified their violent activities in the Ahoada communities of Ahoada East Local Government Area, Rivers State, killing two more individuals yesterday.
The rampage resumed in the Edeoha community and surrounding areas after a brutal attack on Sunday, during which four people were murdered, leaving residents in a state of fear.
This region has a history of cult-related violence, including the murder of former Divisional Police Officer Bako Anghashim. Reports indicate that the armed youths reignited their terror early yesterday morning, resulting in the deaths of two individuals at Odiokwu Junction in Ula-Ehuda, Igbu Akoh-Kingdom, Ahoada East LGA.
Hector Ekakita, the Public Relations Officer of Igbu-Akoh Kingdom, confirmed the incidents, stating that residents noticed the movement of individuals dressed in coveralls and military attire on Sunday night. The following morning, locals awoke to find the bodies of two young men, both shot multiple times.
Hector expressed concern that this violence occurred less than 24 hours after five individuals were killed in Edeoha. He urged Rivers State Commissioner of Police Mohammed Mustapha to urgently enhance security in the area, as remnants of cult groups appear to have returned to terrorize the community.
He said, “At Odiokwu Junction early this morning, we found the bodies of two young men riddled with bullets. We don’t know who they are; this is happening barely 24 hours after four people were killed in Edeoha.
“Last night, we saw some youths moving around in blue coveralls, and some were wearing army raincoats. We can’t confirm if they were the ones responsible for the shootings. We thought the insecurity in our community was behind us, but it seems some remnants have resurfaced to disrupt our peace.
“We are appealing to the new Commissioner of Police to take swift action. In just one week, we have lost seven individuals.” He also called on the youth in the council to lay down their arms and allow peace to return to the community, emphasizing that the area is in distress.
The situation has escalated tensions in the region, prompting some residents to begin fleeing. Meanwhile, Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, has not yet confirmed the deaths of the two individuals.
