Set to open in 2025, the “M10 Memorial” will be located in the popular Puerto Madero area and aims to attract one million visitors annually, according to its official website.
“We want our father to be close to the love of the people, and to grant the wish of all those who want to bring him a flower,” Maradona’s daughter, Dalma Maradona, said during a YouTube presentation on Thursday.
The 1,000-square-meter memorial will offer free access to Argentines, and those who make a donation to the Maradona Foundation can have their photo displayed on a “heritage wall” within the site.
Dalma explained that the foundation—led by her and four of Maradona’s other children—was established to “honour him and preserve his legacy.”
Earlier this month, an Argentine court approved the transfer of Maradona’s remains from a cemetery to a mausoleum at the future memorial, allowing both locals and tourists to visit “Argentina’s great idol.”
Maradona passed away in November 2020 at age 60, two weeks after brain surgery for a blood clot and following decades of struggles with addiction to cocaine and alcohol.
Found dead in his bed from an apparent heart attack, questions remain as a court examines potential negligence by his medical team.
