Published

on

Thousands of people in Bayelsa communities have been forced from their homes due to severe flooding.

Many victims from various communities are now sheltering on bridges, roads, and in makeshift camps, sending urgent pleas to the Federal and Bayelsa State governments for help.

The floods have submerged homes, schools, healthcare centers, places of worship, roads, and farmlands, with the hardest-hit areas being Yenagoa, Kolokuma/Opokuma, and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas.

He urged the government to sandfill areas to create higher ground as a temporary measure, while also recommending river embankments, dykes, and dams for long-term flood prevention.

Similarly, King Akile Debekeme, the Pere of Biseni, lamented that despite their region hosting multiple oil and gas facilities, the kingdom remains vulnerable to recurring floods.

He called on the government for relief materials and the establishment of camps for internally displaced persons.

Some displaced individuals, including chiefs’ council secretary Oweifa Godday and Ere Konugha, are now taking refuge on a bridge, separated from their families and struggling with the uncertainty of their situation.

Besides Biseni, communities in Epie Kingdom, Yenagoa, Sampou, Sagbama, and Ogbia have also been severely impacted by this disaster.
