The National Association of Academic Technologists (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have announced a one-month suspension of their indefinite strike action.
This decision follows the Federal Government’s commitment to release two months of the four months of withheld salaries in staggered payments, with the first installment largely completed by the end of October and the second scheduled for the end of November.
In a statement, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of their members and acknowledged the extensive efforts and negotiations involved.
“The win was a result of the collective effort of everyone, and I thank the fans for being patient,” JAC stated.
“After several contacts and patriotic considerations, we have resolved to suspend the ongoing indefinite strike for one month effective Tuesday, November 5, 2024.”
The JAC’s extensive negotiations with high-ranking government officials, including the new Minister of Education, the Minister of Finance, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Accountant-General, and the Department of State Services, led to what the leadership described as an “irrevocable commitment” from the government.
Beyond the immediate release of the two months’ withheld salaries, discussions are ongoing for the remaining two months, a proposed N50 billion in earned allowances, and an agreed wage award.
As a part of the suspension directive, branch leaders of NASU and SSANU were instructed to hold a joint congress on Monday, November 4, to brief members on developments and encourage them to resume work by Tuesday, November 5.
“We wish to also reiterate that discussions on the remaining two months of withheld salaries, the N50 billion earned allowances, arrears of 25/35 percent, and the wage award have been revisited and are undergoing deliberations,” the statement added.
The leadership commended members for their resilience and dedication, urging continued support and cooperation as talks progress.
“Your total commitment and resoluteness during this struggle have been invaluable, and we are hopeful for a full resolution,” the JAC added.
