Thousands Protest Across Israel After Netanyahu Fires Defence Minister
Thousands of Israelis took to the streets Tuesday night to protest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s abrupt dismissal of Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, echoing — albeit on a smaller scale — the massive protests that erupted when Netanyahu first attempted to fire Gallant in March 2023.
Netanyahu cited “mutual distrust” as the reason for Gallant’s removal, saying it “helped the enemy,” though critics widely viewed the decision as politically motivated, possibly tied to efforts to codify the exemption of ultra-Orthodox men from mandatory military service.

In response, anti-government groups sent thousands of text alerts urging citizens to mobilize. Demonstrators gathered in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Caesarea, and other cities across Israel. In Tel Aviv, protestors blocked both lanes of the Ayalon Highway — a frequent site for protests — lighting bonfires, waving Israeli flags, and displaying images of hostages alongside yellow flags symbolizing solidarity with the captives.
Chanting slogans like “He’s a traitor!” and “Democracy or revolution!” the crowd voiced outrage toward Netanyahu. Demonstrators used concrete blocks from a nearby construction site to create barriers near the Azrieli Junction, underscoring the intensity of the protests.
