Argentinian authorities have charged three individuals in connection with the death of former One Direction member Liam Payne, who passed away on October 16 after a fall from a third-floor balcony at a Buenos Aires hotel.

The National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office in Argentina stated that one person accompanying Payne is accused of “abandonment of a person followed by death.” A hotel employee and a third person are also facing charges related to supplying drugs. Authorities have not released the names of those involved.

EDITOR’S PICKS

Payne, 31, known worldwide from his rise to fame on The X Factor and as part of One Direction, was staying at the CasaSur hotel. Reports indicate that emergency services received two calls from hotel staff about Payne, who was described as having consumed “too many drugs and alcohol” and reportedly “trashing the entire room.” Police later found substances in his hotel room, and items were destroyed in the aftermath of his passing.

On Thursday, toxicology tests confirmed traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s system. The post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was “multiple trauma” and “internal and external hemorrhage” resulting from the fall, and medical reports suggest Payne may have been semi- or fully unconscious at the time. The prosecutor’s office has ruled out any indication that Payne’s actions were conscious or voluntary, suggesting he was unaware of his behaviour.

Investigations continue, with authorities conducting nine property raids in Buenos Aires, seizing Payne’s laptop and other devices, and reviewing over 800 hours of security footage from the hotel and surrounding areas. Testimonies from hotel staff, friends, family members, and medical professionals are also being examined.
