“The bodies of 563 fallen Ukrainian defenders were returned to Ukraine,” the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said in a social media statement, marking one of the largest repatriations of Ukrainian servicemen killed in action since the conflict began.
According to the statement, 320 of the remains were from the Donetsk region, including 89 soldiers killed near Bakhmut, a town Russia captured in May 2023 following a prolonged and intense battle. An additional 154 bodies were repatriated from morgues within Russia.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine has publicly disclosed official figures on military casualties in the ongoing conflict.
