Top Military Officers Pay Tribute To Late Lt. Gen. Lagbaja Ahead Of Today’s Burial

On Thursday, the military high command gathered to honor the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5 after a brief illness.

His remains were transported from Lagos to Abuja, marking the beginning of a solemn farewell attended by top military personnel, family, and notable dignitaries, including Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the tribute began at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed Airport, where a cream-colored SUV hearse delivered his body to the Nigerian Air Force wing. Soldiers from the Guards Brigade held a military parade, demonstrating respect and reverence for Lagbaja’s contributions.

At exactly 10:32 a.m., six senior officers accompanied the body to a C-130H NAF aircraft, which departed at 11:45 a.m., transporting the remains to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Upon arrival, a guard of honor welcomed him, and preparations commenced for his final interment at the National Military Cemetery.

Reflecting on Lagbaja’s extraordinary career, Maj. Gen. Kelvin Aligbe, Commander of Training and Doctrine Command, remembered his longtime friend and comrade as a leader whose dedication and skill set him apart.

He highlighted Lagbaja’s distinction as the only officer to command a battalion twice, underscoring his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and service to the nation. Aligbe expressed his belief that Lagbaja’s legacy would live on through the dedication of those who served under him, stating, “We honor him by upholding his values of service and devotion.”

Representing the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, Bilikisu Ibrahim paid tribute to Lagbaja as a man of deep faith and resilience, describing him as “a pillar of protection and a beacon of hope.” She recalled his strength, which was rooted in spirituality, allowing him to guide his men with courage and compassion.

In a final tribute, Tade Adekunle, Global President of St. Charles Old Boys Association, read a poem honoring Lagbaja as an “immortal hero.”

President Bola Tinubu also extended condolences, celebrating Lagbaja’s service since his commissioning in 1992 and highlighting his leadership roles in key military operations across Nigeria.

Lagbaja, an alumnus of the United States Army War College with a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, courage, and honor.
