Why Nigerians Must Pay for New National ID Card – NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that Nigerians will need to pay for the new multipurpose national identity card, citing limited government revenue and the need to ensure production for only those who truly require it.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Speaking at a two-day roundtable for journalists in Lagos, Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, explained that this decision avoids repeating past challenges when over two million free ID cards were issued, many of which remain uncollected.

“The government’s limited revenue is a major factor in the decision to make Nigerians pay for the new ID card,” Iwegbu stated.

The Director of Information Technology at NIMC, Mr. Lanre Yusuf, also addressed the inefficiency of past free card initiatives. He described the new ID card system as “post-paid,” requiring individuals to request and pay for the card only if they need it. To streamline the process, citizens will choose a pickup location when requesting the card, ensuring a tailored approach.

Recognizing financial challenges, Yusuf revealed that the government has programs to make the cards accessible to less privileged Nigerians who require them to access government services. “This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to inclusivity and equality,” he added.

The multipurpose ID cards, powered by AfriGO in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System, are set to launch soon. These cards will support identity verification, payments, and access to government services across multiple Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

To facilitate convenience, NIMC has partnered with banks nationwide, allowing Nigerians to request and collect their ID cards at any bank branch. Yusuf emphasized that the collaboration aims to ensure a seamless experience for all citizens.

The multipurpose card is expected to enhance accessibility to government interventions and services while promoting a more efficient identity management system across the country.
