The Imo State Coordinator, Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Dr. Martins Dike, says the crisis in the institute could have been averted but for “ignorance” on the part of some of the gladiators.

He stated this in an interview with newsmen at the just concluded  ISPON’s 38th Professional Development Conference/ Exhibition (PDC) held recently in Owerri.

According to him, “The problem the institute has been passing through is coming from a group of people who don’t know much about the institute. They are ignorant; they don’t even know the laws and the guidelines.

“The institute as an NGO before was operating through constitutions. It was chartered in 2014. After the chartering, the Act became the guiding principle.

“The Act also said that the Governing Board should develop a general policy guideline to run the affairs of the institute. As a result, there are two documents that are controlling the institute: the Act and the general policy guideline. So whatever thing we do, must be in compliance with what is in those two documents.”

He said that he made several efforts to dissuade claimants to the positions of president and registrar, Mr. Yusuf Haruna Malgwi and Mr. Benson Adam-Otite, from forming a parallel governing board in the institute.

He added that the Yusuf Malgwi-led governing board was formed contrary to the laws guiding ISPON.

“Secondly,” he continued, “every year we have general annual meeting and an annual conference – two things. Annual conference is one where we want to develop the competence of the members. Then we have the Annual General Meeting – this is another thing entirely.

“There are two different things here: The Act and the general policy guideline say, ‘that election of people into the governing board must be done in an annual general meeting.’

“We have four to five different kinds of meetings: we have annual general meeting; we have extra-ordinary general meeting; we have ordinary meetings; and the rest of them.

“The Act has said that the election into the governing board must be at an annual general meeting. But these other people who don’t understand these things went to have a general meeting or selection in an extra-ordinary general meeting. They didn’t know all these things and I have been advising them.

The Imo state coordinator disclosed that he went to great lengths to prevent the present crisis in the institute but was ignored by some of the personalities involved.

“We have been calling them. And I know personally the efforts I made to prevent this crisis.

“One, when the former registrar came for election in Awka, I personally spoke with him, we had some elections. I told him certain things he didn’t heed to. I told him that the way they’re going about this matter is not the right way.

“I spoke to Malgwi in Enugu and in Cross River, but they wanted to go the wrong way. Malgwi told me that he doesn’t want to repeat the class. I knew the role we played in getting this Act.
