Deploy More Troops As Lakurawa Sect Expands Operations

The Federal Government has ramped up efforts to combat the Lakurawa sect by deploying additional military personnel, establishing new formations, and bolstering security measures in affected states, particularly in Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, and Kaduna.

This decision follows the sect’s expansion from Sokoto and Kebbi in the North-West to Niger and Kaduna in the North-Central region.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Sokoto State Government, under Governor Ahmad Aliyu, has prioritized security as part of its agenda. Special Adviser on Security Matters, Col. Ahmed Usman (retd.), confirmed that more operatives and equipment will be deployed to the state. Following a November 8 attack on Mera village in Kebbi, which left 17 dead, the government has invested in security infrastructure, including forward operation bases and advanced surveillance systems.

Efforts to strengthen security have seen Sokoto establish the state-owned Community Guards to support intelligence gathering and restore peace. Partnerships with federal agencies and awareness campaigns aim to educate citizens on security measures and reporting suspicious activities.

At the federal level, Defence Minister Muhammad Abubakar assured that operations like “Fansan Yamma” are making progress. Recent airstrikes and ground operations have dislodged Lakurawa fighters from their hideouts, recovering stolen cattle and pushing the group into retreat.

Community leaders have called for a permanent military presence in vulnerable areas, citing porous borders and inadequate policing. Some suggest dialogue to complement kinetic operations, emphasizing the need for sustainable security solutions to prevent re-emergence.

The Niger State Government, alongside Sokoto and Kebbi, has pledged collaboration to eradicate the sect, while local leaders highlight improved conditions and renewed hope among residents as military deployments restore a sense of safety.
