Finland Investigates Fibre-Optic Cable Damage Amid Sabotage Concerns
Authorities in Finland are investigating a damaged fibre-optic cable after two separate cuts disrupted internet service for thousands of households.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Swedish officials have suggested the damage may be an act of “sabotage” on the cable, which links Finland and Sweden. However, Finnish police stated they currently have no evidence of criminal activity.

One of the cuts has been repaired, while work continues on the second, according to Nordic telecoms company GlobalConnect. Approximately 6,000 households in Finland were affected by the outage, though users in Sweden were unaffected.
Recent weeks have seen several instances of suspected sabotage targeting critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea region, intensifying regional security concerns.
Swedish Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin commented on the incident, saying, “Due to the circumstances surrounding what happened, sabotage is suspected.” Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne also addressed the situation, writing on X: “The authorities are investigating the matter together with the company. We take the situation seriously.”
Niklas Ekström, a GlobalConnect communications manager, confirmed the outage affected Finnish households on Monday.

The Baltic Sea has become a hotspot for suspected infrastructure tampering, particularly since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Last month, cables linking Sweden to Lithuania and Finland to Germany were damaged in Swedish territorial waters.
Sweden has formally requested China’s cooperation in an ongoing investigation, as a Chinese ship, the Yi Peng Three, was reportedly in the vicinity during the incidents and is now anchored in international waters near Denmark.
