Marc Guehi’s ‘I Love Jesus’ Message On Rainbow Armband Could Lead To FA Disciplinary Action
Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi may face disciplinary action from the Football Association (FA) after writing “I love Jesus” on his rainbow-colored captain’s armband during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the armbands, which were issued to all Premier League clubs, were part of the Stonewall Rainbow Laces campaign, promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion in football.
Under the Laws of the Game, slogans or emblems that promote the values of football, respect, and integrity, such as those tied to the Rainbow Laces campaign, are allowed. However, political, religious, or personal messages are explicitly banned.

A rule change last summer reinforced that all captains’ armbands must adhere to these guidelines, warning that violations could result in sanctions from the competition organizer, national football association, or FIFA.
Guehi’s decision to inscribe a religious message on the armband, which was intended to symbolize support for LGBTQ+ rights, could be considered a breach of these regulations, potentially adding to the severity of the issue.
The FA’s kit regulations prohibit “any political or religious message” on player attire and state that “disciplinary action may be taken” for violations.
This incident has drawn parallels to Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy, a practicing Muslim, who chose not to wear the rainbow armband, instead opting for a standard black one.

Ipswich Town released a statement supporting Morsy’s decision: “Ipswich Town Football Club is committed to being a fully inclusive club that welcomes everyone,” the statement read.
“At the same time, we respect the decision of our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain’s armband due to his religious beliefs.
“We will continue to grow an environment where all are valued and respected, both on and off the pitch.”
