2027: Mixed Reactions Greet Seyi Tinubu’s Endorsement as Next Lagos Governor
Reactions have continued to trail the endorsement of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, by various groups for the position of Lagos State Governor in 2027.
Findings by Eko Hot Blog revealed that the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), an umbrella body for youth groups across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, endorsed Seyi Tinubu in a statement issued in Owerri, Imo State.
The coalition cited his philanthropic gestures as evidence of his selflessness.
“When there was flooding in Borno State, Mr. Seyi Tinubu and his team were there to sympathize with and support affected Nigerians whose properties, homes, and means of livelihood were destroyed.
He provided food, household items, medicine, and financial aid during that difficult period,” the coalition stated.
Similarly, the Lagos branch of the Middle Belt Youths, during a press conference, urged Seyi Tinubu to step forward in 2027.
Dr. Stanley Augustine Kavwam, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Middle Belt Forum, and Capt. Brent Kane, the group’s National Youth Leader, described Seyi as the leader Lagos needs.
In the same vein, a socio-political organization, Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST), endorsed him as their preferred candidate.
The group, led by its president, Comr. Adejorin Tai Manuel, described Seyi Tinubu as a visionary leader with intellect, empathy, and strategic acumen.
“Seyi Tinubu’s philanthropic contributions, leadership skills, and commitment to societal progress underscore his readiness to serve as governor.
His dynamic approach to governance and human capital development positions him as a transformative figure capable of building on the achievements of his predecessors while setting new benchmarks for excellence,” the group said.
However, not all reactions have been positive. A prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, criticized the endorsements, calling them a distraction.
In a Facebook post, he remarked, “Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor? This is a needless distraction. Ruling Lagos is not the job of boys.”
The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths rejected the endorsement, emphasizing that Lagos should be led by its indigenes.
“Our attention has been drawn to the recent endorsement of Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor by CONYL.
While Mr. Seyi Tinubu has his democratic rights, we condemn this ill-fated endorsement as anti-democratic and a deliberate attempt to deny Lagos indigenes their right to self-governance in 2027,” the group stated.
They further highlighted that, except for one instance, no true Lagos indigene has governed the state since 1999, accusing political actors of marginalizing Lagosians.
“We suggest Seyi Tinubu exercises his democratic rights in Osun State or elsewhere, but for us, there is no vacancy for non-indigenes in Lagos State in 2027. The marginalization of Lagos indigenes has led to the state’s underdevelopment,” the group added.
The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also rejected the idea.
Its spokesperson, Hakeem Amode, criticized any attempts to impose Seyi Tinubu as governor, questioning whether the position was becoming an inheritance.
“Governorship is not a gift. Lagosians will resist such an imposition. If the Tinubu camp resorts to past tactics, it will face strong opposition,” Amode stated.
Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju described the endorsement as laughable, accusing the Tinubu family of treating Lagos as a monarchy.
“This is laughable because it underestimates Lagosians. Is Lagos a monarchy where power is the birthright of the Tinubu family? This happens because elections in Lagos are often selections. Political actors in the state must rise to the occasion and do what is right for the people,” Adeyanju remarked.
He also called for greater accountability, emphasizing that Nigeria practices federalism, not monarchy, where political power is inherited.
“It is the responsibility of Lagos political actors to stand up and prioritize the interest of the state above any family or personal ambitions,” he concluded.
