Thousands Evacuated As Mount Kanlaon Erupts in Philippines

Philippine authorities evacuated nearly 90,000 people after Mount Kanlaon on Negros Island erupted, spewing ash, lava, and rocks. Officials warned of possible further eruptions in the coming days.

“This is very destructive and it can burn everything in its path, including vegetation, buildings and humans,” said Teresito Bacolcol, the head of seismology at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. “This can kill.”

Authorities raised the alert level for Mount Kanlaon from 2 to 3, warning of possible stronger eruptions.

A 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) danger zone was declared, affecting about 47,000 people in La Castellana. The Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City, with a capacity of 30,000, was designated as the main evacuation center, with shelters set up in 11 villages.

Kanlaon has erupted more than 40 times since 1866, according to the seismology office. Three hikers were killed after an eruption in 1996.
