Tinubu Commissions NIS First Solar-Powered Technology Innovation Complex
The state-of-the-art complex is named after the president and aims to revolutionize the country’s migration and border management processes.
The complex includes several key components: the Command and Control Centre (for regular migration), NIS Data Centre, ECOWAS Biometric Card Production Centre, Interior Data Centre, and a Solar Power Plant.
During the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu highlighted the significance of the complex in enhancing national security and improving the efficiency of migration and border management.
He expressed his satisfaction with the achievement, saying, “It is a great pleasure for me to stand before you today to commission the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex at the Nigeria Immigration Service headquarters. This will be used judiciously for the prosperity of the nation.”
He further emphasized the importance of technology in governance, noting that Nigeria’s progress in migration management and security aligns with the administration’s promise to implement innovative solutions across various government sectors. “We have delivered on our promise to bring innovative solutions, especially in the Nigeria Immigration Service. Today, we are making tremendous progress,” the president stated.
The complex, which includes a Data Centre, Command and Control Centre, Visa Approval Centre, and ECOWAS Biometric Card Production Centre, also features a solar farm to ensure sustainable energy use. According to President Tinubu, the integration of technology is vital for Nigeria’s future, saying, “At this stage, over 200 million people, a leader in Africa, must embrace technology, innovation, and knowledge-based opportunities.”
He commended the efforts of the Minister of Interior and expressed pride in the country’s achievements in immigration, particularly in enhancing the passport issuance process, which has improved Nigeria’s global reputation.
In her address, the Comptroller-General of NIS, Kemi Nanna Nandap, explained that the new complex would play a crucial role in national security. It will help assess the risk level of individuals entering the country, detect irregular migration patterns, and monitor unmanned borders in difficult-to-reach areas. She also emphasized that the complex is the first of its kind in Africa, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Nandap explained that the centre will be a central hub for the NIS’s digital infrastructure, enhancing data management, storage, and analysis. This will help the NIS efficiently manage migrant records, ensure border surveillance, and improve national security.
The NIS boss also noted that the complex is aligned with the current administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, demonstrating the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to drive economic growth, enhance security, and improve citizens’ experiences.
