Drama as Youths Openly Challenge Nigerian Lawmaker Who Has Spent 32 Years in Office

A mild drama unfolded in Abuja on Tuesday as a group of youths confronted Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa, who claimed to have held political office for about 32 years.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the youths criticized him for clinging to power, questioning whether there are no other qualified individuals in Bayelsa capable of taking over the seat.

The incident occurred at Merit House during an interactive conference on electoral reform, titled Setting the Agenda, organized by the Civil Society Coalition for Sustainable Development.

During the question-and-answer session, the youths grew increasingly frustrated and demanded that the lawmaker step aside to make room for fresh leadership.

“Honorable, if I heard you correctly, you’ve been in office for 32 years. What benefits have the people of Bayelsa gained from your administration? Why are you still holding this position after 32 years? Are there no other qualified youths or individuals in Bayelsa who can take over your seat?” one youth asked.

Another angrily added, “You have no right to remain in office. Honorable Fred, 32 years, that’s even before I was born, and you’ve been in office this whole time. The first time I heard about you was two years ago when your mother passed away. The next time was when there was a fire outbreak at Karu Market, where you made empty promises. If not for today, nobody would even know you.”

As the confrontation escalated, the moderator quickly intervened to calm the situation and bring the exchange to an end.
