Senate Seeks Justice in NDLEA Shooting of Toddlers

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has called for justice in the tragic case of two-year-old Onosereba Omhonria, who was killed, and his one-year-old brother, Eromonsele, left battling severe eye injuries after being shot by NDLEA operatives in Asaba, Delta State, on July 13, 2023.

The children were with their mother in her shop when the operatives opened fire. Onosereba succumbed to his injuries at the Federal Medical Center in Asaba, while Eromonsele urgently requires treatment to save his eyesight. The family has petitioned the Senate, seeking a thorough investigation and justice.

The family’s counsel, Matthew Edaghese & Co., demanded N2 billion in compensation and funds for Eromonsele’s medical treatment abroad. In response, the NDLEA offered N25 million, a sum lawmakers condemned as grossly inadequate and insensitive.

Senator Neda Imaseun, chairman of the committee, criticized the NDLEA’s offer, highlighting the loss of a young life and the ongoing trauma for the family. “A child’s life is immeasurable, and this offer is insulting,” he stated.

Edaghese accused the NDLEA of stalling justice, noting that an earlier evaluation set the cost of Eromonsele’s treatment at $150,000 (₦250 million), which the agency has yet to address. He stressed the urgency of immediate action.

The Senate committee has vowed to ensure justice for the family, urging the NDLEA to act responsibly and without further delay.
