Farounbi Urges PDP in Oyo to Boost Visibility Ahead of Future Elections
Dr. Yemi Farounbi, a former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, has urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State to become more active if it wants to succeed in future elections.
Speaking in Ibadan on Tuesday, he praised Governor Seyi Makinde’s performance but criticized the PDP’s lack of visibility in the state.
Farounbi noted that while the PDP-led government is doing well, the party itself is not making its presence felt among the people. He expressed concerns that the party’s leadership is not engaging with residents or organizing meetings to strengthen its position. According to him, this could hurt the party during elections if it doesn’t improve its visibility.
He explained that political parties, not individuals, are essential for winning elections. Farounbi referenced the Supreme Court case of Rotimi Amaechi versus Celestine Omehia, which established that election victories belong to parties and not candidates.
He emphasized that the PDP must work harder to maintain its relevance in the state’s political landscape.
He also pointed out that the PDP’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) is unknown to most residents, which further highlights the party’s lack of public engagement. He compared this to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which, despite being less active, still has a more recognizable PRO.
The elder statesman urged the PDP to focus on building a stronger structure and improving its communication with the people. He warned that if the party continues to rely solely on Governor Makinde’s performance, it might struggle in elections when the government’s term ends.
