Multiple Accidents Cause Gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A major gridlock has formed on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, stretching from Seven Up bus stop in Lagos to Kara Bridge in Ogun State, due to multiple accidents.

At Kara Bridge, a truck carrying rolled steel coils and another hauling a container were involved in a crash. Steel coils spilled onto the bridge, blocking traffic, while the container dangled dangerously off the side.

According to Kehinde Hazmat, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), an earlier accident had already occurred on the bridge before the truck collision. The first crash involved a vehicle and resulted in the death of a male driver. His body was taken to the morgue by FRSC officials.

Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the accidents.

He explained that officials found the trucks involved in the second crash had caused a total traffic blockage. Emergency teams, including FRSC, LASEMA, TRACE, and the Nigerian Army, were seen at the site working to clear the debris. A crane was being used to remove the hanging container and free up the road.

The situation has left commuters stranded, and some commercial vehicles have taken advantage by raising fares. The cost of transport from Magboro to Berger, normally ₦500, was increased to ₦1,000. Other vehicles avoided the route altogether, worsening the struggle for stranded passengers trying to get to their destinations.
