The incident occurred on September 4, 2024, at their residence in No. 60 Ogbaga Road, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki Local Government Area.
The suspect has been charged with murder under the Criminal Laws of Ebonyi State and appeared before the Abakaliki Magistrate Court.
The Presiding Magistrate, Chinedu Agama, did not accept Chima’s plea due to jurisdictional limitations and ordered the defendant to be held in custody at the correctional center while awaiting further instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
During the court proceedings, the Abakaliki Magistrate Court instructed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward it to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal counsel.
The matter has been adjourned until December 31, 2024, to allow sufficient time for the DPP’s advice to be prepared. The DPP’s guidance will play a key role in deciding whether the case should be transferred to the High Court or if it falls within the jurisdiction of the Magistrate Court.
Previously, the Prosecutor, Emmanuel, had informed the court of the details surrounding the defendant’s alleged crime.
He told the Court that the defendant had used the iron rod to beat the deceased until she died before he stopped, an offence punishable under Section 319 (1) of the criminal code law, cap 33, Vol 1, laws of Ebonyi, 2009.

The defence counsel, Daniel Onuoha, appealed for his client’s bail but it was rejected because the Court lacked jurisdiction over the matter and the defendant was remanded accordingly.
