Gisèle Pelicot’s Ex-Husband, 50 Others Jailed For 20 Years In Rape Trial

Gisèle Pelicot’s ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, 72, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of drugging, raping, and enabling dozens of men to assault her over nearly a decade.

The case, heard in Avignon, southern France, marks the country’s largest-ever rape trial.

Pelicot, who had confessed to his crimes, was convicted on all charges, including aggravated rape and indecent image production involving family members.

His accomplice, Jean-Pierre Maréchal, described as his “disciple,” received a 12-year sentence for similar crimes, including the abuse of his own wife.

Of the 50 other men tried, 46 were convicted of rape, with sentences ranging from three to 15 years. Some defendants argued they were unaware Ms.

Pelicot was unconscious during the assaults, igniting nationwide debate over France’s legal definition of rape.

Ms. Pelicot, who waived her right to anonymity, stood as a central figure in the trial, attending most sessions and speaking openly about the ordeal.

Supported by her children and grandchildren, she described the trial as a “difficult ordeal” but emphasized her commitment to exposing the truth.

Outside the court, hundreds of supporters gathered, chanting her name and displaying banners reading, “Thank you Gisèle.” Ms. Pelicot expressed gratitude to her supporters and optimism for a future rooted in mutual respect between men and women.

The sentencing has sparked mixed reactions, with Ms. Pelicot’s children expressing disappointment over the relatively low penalties for the co-defendants. Pelicot’s lawyer indicated he may consider appealing the verdict.
