Wolves Appoint Vitor Pereira As New Head Coach

Wolverhampton Wanderers confirmed Thursday that Vitor Pereira has been appointed as their new head coach, as the club fights to avoid Premier League relegation.

The 56-year-old Portuguese manager joins from Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab on an 18-month contract, following the dismissal of Gary O’Neil amid a difficult run of form.

Pereira, who came close to replacing Rafael Benitez as Everton manager in 2022, brings a wealth of experience, having previously won two Primeira Liga titles with Porto and the Greek Super League with Olympiakos.

The BBC reported that Wolves paid around one million euros ($1 million) to secure Pereira’s services.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi expressed confidence in the appointment, saying, “We are delighted to welcome Vitor Pereira to Wolves as the new head coach of our men’s first-team. Vitor is a highly respected and experienced coach who has achieved success across different leagues and will bring a new approach for the test ahead.

“This is a challenging moment for the club, and we want to thank Vitor for taking on this responsibility. We have full confidence in his ability to guide us back on track, alongside the players and staff, and the entire club will be united in supporting him to achieve success.”

Pereira took charge of his first training session Thursday and will lead Wolves in their crucial away match against fellow relegation battlers Leicester on Sunday, who are five points ahead in the standings.

O’Neil was dismissed after Wolves’ 2-1 home loss to Ipswich on Saturday, their fourth consecutive defeat, leaving the club second from bottom with just nine points from 16 matches. O’Neil had been appointed in August 2023 and had signed a new four-year deal earlier this year.
