Fayemi Mourns Loss of Over 30 Children in Ibadan Stampede

Former Governor of Ekiti State and ex-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has expressed profound sadness over the tragic death of more than 30 children in a stampede during an event in Ibadan.

According to a statement released by his Media Office, Fayemi conveyed his condolences to the grieving families and the government of Oyo State describing the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has overshadowed the Christmas season with sorrow.

The former Ekiti governor  called for stricter safety measures in organising large events, especially those involving children, to prevent such disasters in the future.

He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and comfort for the affected families.

He said: “I was deeply saddened to learn about the tragic loss of over 30 children in a stampede during a Christmas event in Ibadan. This devastating event, which also left many others injured, is one of the most painful incidents involving children in recent times.

“As a parent and leader, I cannot imagine the pain of losing so many young, innocent lives. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their children, and I pray for strength and healing for those whose children are injured.

“This tragedy is particularly painful because it happened during a season meant for joy and celebration. The loss of these young souls is a heavy blow to their families and the entire nation.

“This unfortunate incident highlights the urgent need for event organisers to prioritise safety and follow global best practices when planning large gatherings. Protecting participants, especially children, must always come first. I urge the authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and hold those responsible accountable.

“State governments should consider banning non-academic events in public schools unless strict safety protocols are in place. Such steps can help ensure the well-being of our children.

“May the departed souls  rest in peace, and may their families find comfort in this difficult time.”

Fayemi concluded by urging communities and leaders to work together to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
