2025 Budget: Defence, Education, Health, Other Ministries Get Over N1tn Each

No fewer than 10 federal ministries and agencies have been allocated over ₦1 trillion each in the 2025 budget.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the allocations are detailed in the 2025 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly. The ministries receiving significant funding include Police Affairs, Interior, Defence, Finance, Power, Works, Budget and Economic Planning, Niger Delta, Education, and Health.

The Ministry of Finance tops the list with an allocation of ₦17.52 trillion, the majority of which is designated for salary payments. This represents an 87.78% increase, or ₦8.19 trillion, compared to the ₦9.33 trillion allocated in 2023.

Following this is the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, which saw an increase of ₦2.33 trillion (52.35%) to ₦6.78 trillion in the 2025 budget.

The Ministry of Defence ranks third, with an appropriation of ₦2.92 trillion, an increase of ₦1.34 trillion (84.81%). Similarly, the Ministry of Interior received ₦1.13 trillion, up from ₦461 billion in 2024.

The Ministry of Power saw the highest percentage increase, with a 510.46% rise to ₦2.1 trillion from ₦344 billion in 2024. The Ministry of Works received ₦1.14 trillion, up from ₦657.23 billion.

Other notable allocations include ₦2.23 trillion for the Niger Delta Ministry, ₦2.52 trillion for Education, and ₦1.91 trillion for Health.

Last Thursday, the Senate and House of Representatives passed the ₦49.7 trillion “Restoration” 2025 budget for a second reading. The budget, presented by President Bola Tinubu, was widely applauded by lawmakers for its ambition and focus on national development.

The budget was referred to the Committee on Appropriations after a voice vote in the Senate, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. It includes a revenue projection of ₦34.82 trillion to fund an aggregate expenditure of ₦47.9 trillion, leaving a deficit of ₦13 trillion.
