EKO HOT BLOG reports that the tax reform bills, currently under consideration by the National Assembly, have sparked significant controversy and faced resistance, particularly from northern leaders. This opposition has led to consultations being initiated by lawmakers to address concerns and seek a balanced approach.
Despite the pushback, President Tinubu maintained that while the reforms may not be universally accepted, they are essential for the nation’s progress and are here to stay. He emphasized that the reforms are designed to be pro-poor and to broaden the tax base, ensuring that more citizens contribute to the country’s development.
“The tax reform is here to stay. The reform is pro-poor and it is to widen the tax net, so we can have more people paying,” Tinubu stated.
He further underscored that true leadership involves making tough decisions at the right time, regardless of opposition, adding, “The hallmark of a good leader is the ability to do what you have to do at the time it ought to be done.”
Tinubu’s commitment to these reforms signals a long-term vision for improving Nigeria’s fiscal policies and ensuring sustainable economic growth through a more inclusive tax system.
