‘We Are Not for Sale’ – Greenland Rejects Trump’s Remarks On US Control
Greenland has once again reiterated that it is not for sale, responding to US President-elect Donald Trump’s recent comments about wanting to take control of the territory.
“Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland,” said Prime Minister Mute Egede on Monday, following Trump’s remarks, which he had previously made several years ago.

Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is strategically important to the United States due to its proximity to the shortest route from the US to Europe and the presence of a major US military facility.
However, Denmark has yet to respond to Trump’s latest comments.
On Sunday, Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating: “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Egede swiftly rejected Trump’s statement, emphasizing, “We are not for sale and we will not be for sale,” while also stressing the importance of continuing cooperation and trade with the global community, particularly with neighbouring countries.
Trump’s remarks came after he announced his intention to nominate Ken Howery, his former ambassador to Sweden, as the new US ambassador to Denmark.
Howery expressed gratitude for the nomination, pledging to strengthen ties between the US and Denmark, including with the US consulate in Greenland.
In 2019, Trump first suggested the idea of the US purchasing Greenland, which led to backlash from Danish and Greenlandic leaders.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the idea “absurd,” prompting Trump to cancel a planned state visit to Denmark.

The concept of acquiring Greenland dates back even earlier, with US President Andrew Johnson first proposing the idea in the 1860s.
In a separate matter, Trump also threatened to reassert US control over the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of charging excessive fees.
Panama’s president swiftly countered, asserting that “every square metre” of the canal and surrounding area belongs to Panama.
