- Mrs. Funmilayo Ogunseyi, mother of Naomi Silekunola, ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, calls on President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians for intervention.
- Naomi is charged in connection with a stampede at a funfair that claimed the lives of 35 children.
- Ogunseyi says her daughter’s humanitarian intentions led to unintended tragedy.
Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife, is among three people facing charges after a tragic stampede during a funfair in Ibadan caused the death of 35 children. The court has ordered their detention on accusations of conspiracy, negligence, and failure to ensure safety at the event.
Mrs. Funmilayo Ogunseyi, Naomi’s mother, has released a heartfelt video, begging for mercy and intervention from the President and concerned citizens. She described her daughter’s efforts as purely humanitarian, highlighting her years of outreach work for children, the elderly, and pregnant women across Nigeria.
“My daughter only wanted to help the less fortunate. This tragedy was never intended,” she said, her voice trembling. She also expressed deep sorrow for the families of the deceased children.
Recounting the events, Ogunseyi explained that crowds began gathering as early as 6:30 a.m., hours before the 10 a.m. programme was scheduled to start. Naomi, who was unwell, arrived later, only to face accusations and detention after reporting the incident to the police.
“She fainted during police interrogation and is still in custody, despite her fragile health,” she said.
Through tears, she appealed to President Tinubu and other influential figures to intervene, suggesting her daughter was being targeted by powerful forces.
